Rebel Recording Artist: Rock County
Rock County’s self-titled debut spent a total of twelve months on the Bluegrass Unlimited album chart, three of those months at number one. The album has proven to be a strong introduction to their music. With Rock Solid, the band presents the next step in their evolution.
Rock County has the ability to take a traditional Bluegrass song, such as "Mary Jane, Won’t You Be Mine," and modernize it while keeping the essence of the tradition. In the Bluegrass world of cookie cutter bands where so many modern bands sound the same, Rock County has forged a distinctive sound. Glen Duncan’s inventive fiddling, the group’s ear for interesting vocal harmony, and their knack for song selection combine to create the Rock County sound. Glen’s fiddling graces every cut on the CD and ranges from down & dirty, straight Bluegrass fiddling to beautiful, soaring triple fiddle melodies. Glen, Don Rigsby, and Ray Craft perform the majority of the vocal work with banjo player Scott Vestal pitching in on a few songs. The singing is nothing short of excellent, Don and Ray share the lead singing while Scott and Glen come in on the harmonies. The song selection from the CD covers a nice expanse of styles: the old-timey sounds of fiddle & banjo on "Williamsburg", the hardcore traditional style of "All The Love I Had Is Gone", the country ballad "For Years" (a highlight of the album), the neo-traditional sound of "Mary Jane, Won’t You Be Mine", the modern "Bluegrass sound of Greener Pastures"…it’s diverse music that keeps the listener interested.
Rock County has been around since October of 2001. Since then, they’ve made quite a splash on the Bluegrass scene with high marks on the radio charts and high praises from critics and fans. The current lineup of the band; Glen Duncan, Don Rigsby, Scott Vestal, Robin Smith and Ray Craft; is still putting out the power packed music that Rock County is known for. Rock Solid is strong testament to that.
